
Thomas A. Aloia, MD, MHCM, FACS, FACHE
Thomas Aloia, MD, MHCM, FACS, FACHE, serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, and oversees clinical performance through a focus on community impact, safety and quality, innovation, and value based care. He has served as Ascension’s Chief Clinical Officer since January 1, 2025.
Dr. Aloia joined Ascension in January 2021 as Vice President and Director of Oncology Services, later taking accountability for all clinical service lines. Most recently he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. He has extensive clinical expertise in hepatobiliary surgery, gastrointestinal surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, liver transplantation and functional recovery. Additional expertise includes value-based care, service line design, and patient safety and quality.
He is a trained Hepatobiliary Surgical Oncologist and was a Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). At MDACC, he held various administrative roles focused on patient safety, quality, and outcomes, including Medical Director of the Gastrointestinal Disease Center, Executive Director of Network Outcomes, Chief Quality Officer and Head of the Institute for Cancer Care Innovation.
Dr. Aloia earned his medical degree from UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. He completed a general and thoracic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center, with fellowships in surgical oncology at MD Anderson and hepatobiliary surgery/liver transplantation at Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris. He also holds a certificate in healthcare management from Rice University and a master’s in healthcare management from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
