(Kansas City, Mo.) July 28, 2014 – Carondelet Health in Kansas City, Mo., a part of Ascension, has signed a letter of intent with Prime Healthcare Services, Inc., for the acquisition of the majority of the facilities of Carondelet Health. The transaction would include St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, Mo., and most of their subsidiaries and affiliated facilities.
As part of this transaction, the three Carondelet Health long-term care facilities – Carondelet Manor, Villa Saint Joseph and St. Mary’s Manor – and the two hospitals’ charitable foundations would remain part of Ascension.
“Prime Healthcare’s focus on providing comprehensive quality healthcare in a compassionate, convenient and cost-effective manner aligns with our historical mission of service,” said Michael Dorsey, interim Chief Executive Officer of Carondelet Health. “We’re confident that this change will enable the long-term success of Carondelet Health.”
“Our goal in working with the Board of Carondelet Health during this process has been to strengthen the ministry so its associates, physicians and volunteers are able to continue to provide exceptional, caring health services to the community for years to come,” said Robert J. Henkel, FACHE, Executive Vice President of Ascension and President and Chief Executive Officer of Ascension Health. “We believe this is a positive step for the greater Kansas City community as well as our colleagues at Carondelet Health. Meanwhile, Ascension will continue to serve the community by helping to meet the growing need for senior services.”
“Prime Healthcare looks forward to partnering with Carondelet Health and providing high quality healthcare to residents in Kansas City, Blue Springs and their surrounding communities,” said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services. “Our award-winning clinical and operational expertise combined with Carondelet Health’s dedicated physicians, nurses and employees will allow these hospitals and other facilities to continue their legacy of healthcare excellence.”
“Prime Healthcare has a deep concern for people – for the physicians and staff who provide care, and for those they serve,” said Sr. Diane Steele, SCL, PhD, who was a Board member of Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan., when they were acquired by Prime Healthcare from the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System in 2013. “We’re very pleased that Prime has continued to honor our spiritual heritage demonstrated in care of patients, especially the poor, at both hospitals.”
Terms of the deal are confidential and there will be no additional disclosures until a definitive agreement has been reached.
