Last week, Ascension President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, took time to answer seven probing questions from Becker’s Hospital Review, ranging from how he would solve healthcare’s problems to the best piece of advice he received to how he keeps himself vital.
Tony says he was drawn to healthcare because it offers the opportunity to apply business principles and skills to help people when they’re at their most vulnerable. That’s why he works to eliminate red tape so caregivers can do what’s necessary for people to get the healthcare they need.
His greatest skill, he says, is being a good listener, striving to understand the meaning behind words to understand what people are trying to communicate to him by giving them his full attention.
Tony’s formula for success, he says, is to “go out and get people that are smarter than you. … Give them the resources that they need to do their job and just get the heck out of their way” – advice he learned from a mentor who happened to be his godfather.
That approach is reflected in Tony’s discussion of his greatest achievement: “I don’t have any great achievements,” he says. “My team has great achievements.”
