St. Vincent Among Top 15 U.S. Health Systems

St. Vincent, in the Ascension Indiana Ministry Market, has been named among the top 15 health systems nationwide in a 2016 study by Truven Health Analytics, a leading healthcare data and analytics firm.

The eighth annual Truven study identifies the top health systems in the U.S. in 2016 based on balanced, system-wide clinical and administrative performance. According to Truven, high-performing health systems achieved higher survival rates and fewer errors at a lower overall treatment cost than other systems. The annual study is part of the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® program, a national standard for hospital quality evaluation.

"St. Vincent is honored to be the only Indiana hospital system named to the Truven Top 100," said Jonathan Nalli, Senior Vice President, Ascension Health/Indiana Ministry Market Executive. "This recognition is the result of our associates' commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and value. We are thrilled that national organizations such as Truven are taking notice of our mission-driven approach to care and our dedication to delivering convenience, compassion, service, affordability and quality to our patients."

In total, Truven evaluated 338 health systems and 2,912 member hospitals to identify the 15 U.S. health systems with the highest overall achievement on a balanced scorecard. The scorecard focuses on five performance domains: inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, efficiency, and patient experience. The study relied on public data from the 2013 and 2014 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, CMS Hospital Compare datasets, and 2014 Medicare cost reports.

"This recognition by such a respected independent organization is due to the tremendous efforts of the associates, physicians and caregivers of St. Vincent as they provide compassionate, personalized care across Central Indiana," said Patricia A. Maryland, Dr.PH, President, Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer, Ascension Health. "St. Vincent has been a leader in Ascension's work to deliver safe, affordable, high-quality care, and a great experience for both patients and healthcare providers. We couldn't be more pleased and proud of our St. Vincent colleagues."

"These 15 top-performing health systems prove that quality and efficiency can improve across entire systems, regardless of their size," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals® programs at Truven Health Analytics. "It is clear from our data that many hospital systems have been able to implement a consistent, coordinated approach to quality improvement in the areas that matter most to patients and that is scalable across member hospitals."
