The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown in Nashville, part of Ascension Tennessee, recently completed a makeover of its a pumping room, courtesy of a breast pump company. Leaders at the hospital say the goal of the room is to provide a place where new moms can destress and make more milk for their babies.
The contest, which launched in August 2019 during World Breastfeeding Week, received hundreds of entries from around the country. Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown was selected last month as one of five finalists, advancing after receiving more than 5,000 votes from the public before winning the grand prize.
“Often, pumping is the only thing a NICU mom feels she can do for her infant,” said Brooke Miller, Nurse and Lactation Consultant at Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown. “Our goal is to be able to provide a room where she can escape to decrease stress, increase oxytocin and make more milk. The NICU journey is a roller coaster ride with a lot of highs and lows. These moms deserve a great room.”
“The NICU at Saint Thomas Midtown was nominated by multiple members of its truly dedicated staff,” said Jennifer Jordan, Aeroflow Breastpumps Director of Mom & Baby. “We were so inspired by the stories they shared, and we couldn’t be happier to help create two comfortable, inviting spaces for the incredible mothers who are pumping for their little ones in the NICU each day.”
