Ascension St. John Sapulpa Offers Cardiac Rehab

Ascension St. John Sapulpa now provides cardiac rehab for patients with ongoing heart conditions, who have received heart care or who live with chronic heart disease.

Cardiac rehab is a key part of a patient’s heart-healthy recovery. The Ascension St. John cardiac rehab program combines education with exercise to create a personal plan to help patients manage their cardiac health.

The St. John cardiac rehab team consists of exercise physiologists and nurses who create an exercise program to help patients gain strength and the confidence to return to their normal activities. The cardiac rehab team monitors each patient’s heart rhythm, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation during exercise to help develop an individualized exercise program.

Cardiac rehab is available to patients who have had one or more of the following:

  • Heart attack
  • Angina
  • Cardiac surgery, such as coronary bypass or valve surgery
  • Coronary artery angioplasty or stents
  • Heart failure
  • Heart transplant
  • Peripheral artery disease

The knowledgeable cardiac rehabilitation staff works with patients to develop an exercise program that builds in a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Decreasing the chances of a heart attack
  • Reducing re-hospitalization
  • Decreasing symptoms such as chest discomfort, fatigue or shortness of breath
  • Improving lipid panel (increases good cholesterol-HDL, decreases total cholesterol, bad cholesterol-LDL and triglycerides)
  • Improving medication adherence
  • Improving stamina and endurance
  • Improving daily living activities
  • Slowing the progression of heart disease
  • Improving circulation
  • Reducing stress
  • Reducing depression and improving a sense of well-being

“We are excited to provide this service right here in our community,” said Mike Christian, President, Ascension St. John Sapulpa. “This is one more way to make it more convenient for patients to receive personalized, compassionate care close to home.”

Patients are referred to the program by a physician. The program combines exercise and education in three, one-hour sessions a week, and will last from six to 12 weeks, depending on the progress of the patient. All exercise is closely monitored through telemetry by the staff to ensure patient safety. Most major insurance programs like Medicare cover a large portion of cardiac rehab with timely enrollment.
