Groundbreaking Ascension study published in peer-reviewed journal looks at COVID-19 outcomes by race

In one of the largest COVID-19 studies in the U.S. (11,210 patients treated at 92 hospitals across 12 states) published in JAMA Network Open, Ascension researchers examined if race is associated with hospital mortality.

After adjusting for age, sex, insurance status, comorbidity, neighborhood deprivation and site of care, there was no difference in all-cause, in-hospital mortality between white and Black patients with COVID-19.

“Our findings suggest that once individuals reach the healthcare system, outcomes are similar regardless of race,” said Baligh Yehia, MD, MPP, MSc, Senior Vice President, Ascension, and President, Ascension Medical Group.

“This shows why it is so important to address the social determinants of health, which Ascension is doing through our advocacy efforts, programs to improve community health and other initiatives,” said Rich Fogel, MD, FACC, FHRS, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, Clinical & Network Services, Ascension.
