Ascension Kansas works to eliminate language barriers, prioritize health resources in Spanish-speaking communities

In recognition of Heart Health Month and World Day of Social Justice on Feb. 20, Roz Hutchinson, Marketing and Communications Manager, Ascension Kansas, shares how her role at Ascension inspired her philanthropic work with Wichita-based organizations Cafe Con Leche and Salud + Bienestar.

Both organizations serve the unique needs of Spanish-speaking communities, and Roz, along with Taylor Valdez, Marketing and Communications Specialist, took advantage of a unique opportunity to assist. Funded by Ascension Via Christi and the Adelante-Camarena Foundation, Roz and Taylor hosted events with Cafe Con Leche and Salud +Bienestar to help promote inclusive healthcare for Spanish-speakers in Wichita, Kansas.

The structural cardiology team at Via Christi St. Francis announced they successfully performed their first commercial procedure and the first in the Midwest, completed April 16, 2024, using the Abbott TriClip™ transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) system. This is a first-of-its-kind device to repair a leaky tricuspid valve (known as tricuspid regurgitation or TR).
