Via Christi St. Joseph Emergency Department Construction Progressing

Construction to expand the Via Christi St. Joseph Emergency Department (ED) is moving forward, with completion slated for Spring 2026. The $22 million project, funded by the Kansas Legislature and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, aims to increase the ED's capacity, enhance patient experience and improve patient care.

Eight months into the project, the construction is currently in Phase 2, focusing on building the bulk of the new space. After this phase, Phase 3 will involve moving the existing ED into the new construction. Crews will then begin remodeling the current space.

The project will add 21,000 square feet to the ED, bringing its total size to 36,000 square feet. It will also increase the number of beds from 29 to 49 and introduce an 11-bed psychiatric observation unit. This dedicated unit will provide rapid stabilization and immediate care for behavioral health patients, addressing a critical community need. The current ED sees over 550 behavioral health patients each month, exceeding its intended capacity.

The project also includes larger waiting areas designed to improve patient comfort and reduce stress during their time in the ED.

At the groundbreaking ceremony held on July 31, 2024, Emergency Department Medical Director Matt Sinnwell, MD, emphasized the benefits this project has on patient care. "Space constraints in our current ED can make it difficult for patients to have the space they need when waiting for and receiving care," said Dr. Sinnwell. "Our goal is to create an environment that supports safety, comfort and well-being, driven by our commitment to provide high-quality, patient-centered, compassionate care.”

This project reflects Via Christi’s mission to serve everyone, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable, and enhance its ability to provide care to the community.
