Ascension Hospitals Earn 2025 CMS Overall Hospital Star Ratings

Today Ascension, one of the nation’s leading non-profit health systems serving patients and communities across 16 states and the District of Columbia, announced that 41 of its hospitals (38 CCNs) received the updated Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 2025 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. These ratings, which assess quality of care, patient safety and patient experience, are essential for patients and families making informed healthcare decisions.

"The CMS Overall Star Ratings remain an important tool for patients and families to evaluate hospital quality in the areas that matter most,” said Thomas Aloia, MD, MHCM, FACS, FACHE, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. “At Ascension, our Mission and deep commitment to excellence in quality and safety continue to guide everything we do. These ratings reflect the dedication of our caregivers and associates who work tirelessly to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to those we serve."

The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings are derived from 46 publicly reported quality measures across five quality domains: Mortality, Patient Experience, Readmission, Safety of Care, and Timely and Effective Care. These quality measures are aggregated and a single composite star rating is assigned by CMS for each hospital, with five stars indicating the highest level of hospital performance. CMS requires all hospitals participating in Medicare to collect data for each quality measure, which are reported on Care Compare.

In 2025, CMS reported a star score for 2,891 U.S. hospitals with the national average star rating decreasing from 3.13 stars in 2024 to 3.08 stars in the current year. Ascension had 41 hospitals receive a star rating with the average rating across all facilities of 3.37 stars. Of those Ascension facilities, approximately 21 earned either a five- or four-star rating, reflecting a superior level of performance compared to hospitals with three or fewer stars.

Three Ascension hospitals achieved the prestigious five-star rating, highlighting their outstanding performance in all evaluated quality measures:

Additionally, the following 18 Ascension hospitals (15 CCNs) achieved four-star ratings:

Patients, families and communities can view the star ratings for acute care hospitals on the Care Compare website, a useful tool that can help with making informed healthcare choices.
