Back-to-School Check-ups: Preparing Your Child for the New School Year

If you’re a parent of school-age children, chances are you’re getting ready for the annual back-to-school routine—which should always include a wellness visit.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children receive a physical exam by a pediatrician once a year. For many kids and teens, this back-to-school check-up is often their only visit each year. It’s a valuable opportunity for the pediatrician to conduct a thorough physical and address any emotional, developmental, or social concerns.

Here are a few key things to consider before your child’s annual physical to help set them up for a healthy school year:

Vaccinations:

  •  The AAP  has a recommended immunization schedule based on your child’s age. Staying up to date on vaccines is one of the best ways to protect your child’s health. If you're unsure about their vaccination history or what’s coming up next, don’t hesitate to ask.

Diet and Exercise:

  • Your pediatrician can offer guidance on healthylifestyle or eating habits.
  • This is also a good opportunity to ask about what you need to do to clear your child for sports. If your child is not interested in sports, ask about ways to keep your child active.

Screen time:

  • Screens include TVs, phones, tablets, and video games. Be mindful of how much time your child—and the rest of the family—spend on screens.
  • Discuss what your child is watching, who they interact with online, and consider creating a Family Media Use Plan with your pediatrician’s help.

Growth and development:

  • Ask if your child’s growth and development are on track for their age.
  • For children under five, don’t forget to ask about lead screening.
  • For preteens and teens, use this time to talk about puberty, substance use, and how to approach those conversations at home.

Monitor your child’s mental health:

  • Bring up any concerns about your child’s emotional well-being, school experience, peer relationships, or family stressors. Annual check-ups are a good time to discuss strategies for monitoring mental health throughout the year.
  • If your child feels anxious about school, talk openly about their fears. Emphasizing positives—like seeing friends or learning a favorite subject—can help ease anxiety. But if anxiety becomes school refusal, don’t wait to get help. Your pediatrician and your child’s school team—teacher, principal, nurse, or counselor—can offer valuable support.

Address any specific concerns you have.

  • Whether it’s “Why is my child always tired?” or “How can I better manage my child’s allergies?”—no question is too small. Each child is unique, and your pediatrician is there to help you navigate their individual needs.
  • Also, don’t forget to bring any school-required medical forms to the visit so everything’s ready by the first day.
