This Women’s History Month, Ascension Saint Thomas celebrates the extraordinary contributions of Sister Juliana Beuerlein, a registered nurse, a Daughter of Charity, and pioneering healthcare leader whose vision and compassion helped shape the future of medical care in Middle Tennessee.
Sister Juliana served as CEO of Saint Thomas Hospital from 1980 to 1989, holding the distinction of being the only woman leading a major Tennessee hospital during much of that time. In an era when few women held executive leadership roles in healthcare, she opened doors for others while demonstrating that leadership could be guided by humility, collaboration, and integrity. She mentored future leaders, empowered those around her, and helped redefine what compassionate leadership in healthcare could look like.
Her tenure was marked by significant growth and innovation. Under her leadership, Saint Thomas launched initiatives that were ahead of their time:
- The nation’s largest pharmacy network for the poor, ensuring access to critical medications for underserved communities.
- The Lawrence Grossman Center for Medical Education, now the Curb Center for Advanced Medical Education, which was among the most advanced cardiovascular training and medical education broadcast facilities in the country at the time.
- Expanded support for nursing education and early residency programs. Sister Juliana also chaired the American Hospital Association’s subcommittee on nursing for more than a decade, helping shape the future of the profession nationwide.
Sister Juliana also played a key role in expanding access to care in Rutherford County. She co-led the interdenominational partnership that acquired Middle Tennessee Medical Center, now Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. During the transition to a faith-based, not-for-profit system, she prioritized collaboration with the community and respect for the hospital’s staff and leadership. By building trust and maintaining the hospital’s local identity, she helped establish a strong foundation for growth and long-term community impact.
Today, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital is part of Ascension Saint Thomas, one of the region’s leading health systems, with 18 hospitals and more than 320 sites of care across 45 counties.
Sister Juliana’s influence extended far beyond organizational development. A lifelong servant to the poor and vulnerable, she embodied the healing ministry that remains at the heart of Ascension Saint Thomas today. Her legacy continues through the Sister Juliana Fund, which was created in her honor and has provided millions of dollars in assistance to Saint Thomas associates and their families during times of need.
In 2025, Sister Juliana Beuerlein was inducted into the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame, a recognition of a lifetime of leadership, service, and a lasting impact on healthcare in our state.
Sister Juliana’s life reminds us that faith, compassion, and excellence go hand in hand. She showed that healthcare leadership is strongest when it is rooted in service to others. We celebrate her enduring contributions and the spirit of service she instilled in our ministry. This Women’s History Month, we honor her as a healthcare leader and visionary whose faith, humility, and dedication continue to shape the future of healthcare in Tennessee.
