Nineteen high school students spent four days this summer getting a firsthand look into the future of healthcare through the inaugural Healthcare Academy for Medical Professions (HCAMP) at Ascension Franklin.
The immersive program introduced students from Franklin, Whitnall, St. Francis, Greenfield and Greendale schools to a wide range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare careers. Through hands-on experiences, simulations, hospital tours and direct interaction with Ascension associates and clinicians, students explored specialties including nursing, surgery, emergency medicine, respiratory therapy, laboratory sciences, infection prevention, nutrition and physical therapy.
For many participants, the experience expanded their understanding of the diverse career opportunities available in healthcare. "I've always wanted to become a physician, so this program immediately caught my interest," said Tess Grochowski, a senior at Whitnall High School. "What surprised me most was learning about the many different roles that contribute to patient care in a hospital. My favorite part was the hands-on activities that allowed us to experience some of the skills needed firsthand."
Layla Kainz, also a senior at Whitnall High School, said the program helped bring healthcare careers to life. "I saw HCAMP as a great opportunity to learn more about healthcare professions," Kainz said. "I especially enjoyed touring the hospital and seeing the IV ultrasound demonstration. It gave me a better understanding of what healthcare professionals do every day."
While the program creates personal impact for students, it also addresses a critical regional need. As Wisconsin’s population ages, hospitals face growing challenges in recruiting healthcare professionals.
"Wisconsin is facing a healthcare workforce shortage," said Michael Vastano, Workforce Development Manager for Ascension Wisconsin. "As demand for care continues to grow, we must invest now in developing our future workforce. Programs like HCAMP help us engage students early, expose them to the many rewarding careers available in healthcare, and begin building the talent pipeline our communities will depend on in the years ahead."
Supported by Ascension's Center for Career Advancement, the program is designed to provide students with meaningful exposure to healthcare environments. For Ascension Franklin leaders, the program is about more than career exploration, it's an investment in the community’s future.
"We're planting seeds today for the nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, technologists and healthcare leaders of tomorrow," said Brooke Dierberger, RN, Nursing Director at Ascension Franklin. "Connecting with students early broadens their awareness and can inspire them to pursue a future in healthcare. By engaging local youth, we're investing in the long-term health of our community."
As the inaugural Wisconsin site for HCAMP, Ascension Franklin provided a rare, behind-the-scenes view of healthcare in action. The program concluded with students reflecting on the connections they gained, and leaving with a clearer vision of their professional futures.
