Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Celebrates Completion of Maternity Expansion

Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital announced the completion of its new expanded maternity unit, a $17 million investment that strengthens access to maternity care and enhances the birthing experience for thousands of families across Middle Tennessee.

As Rutherford County continues to grow, so does the need for high-quality women's and maternity services. Last year, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford welcomed 3,328 babies. Across Middle Tennessee, one in every three babies is born at an Ascension Saint Thomas hospital, reflecting the health system's longstanding leadership in women's and infant care.

The 12,500-square-foot expansion adds 13 new postpartum suites and a 10 bassinet satellite well-baby nursery, creating a modern environment where advanced medical care meets thoughtful design. Inspired by hospitality-focused spaces, the new unit prioritizes privacy, comfort and connection while providing enhanced resources for patients, families and caregivers.

"From the design of the patient rooms to the addition of new postpartum and nursery space, every aspect of this expansion was created with families in mind," said Daphne David, president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. "We're proud to offer an environment that combines advanced clinical care with the comfort, privacy and support families deserve during one of life's most meaningful experiences."

The maternity expansion was supported by a $6 million gift from The Christy-Houston Foundation, Inc., and an additional $500,000 raised through the Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation. Together, these contributions helped make the $17 million project possible and reflect a commitment to expanding access to exceptional care close to home. Turner Construction Company served as the project's construction partner.

The expansion builds on Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford's continued investment in maternal and infant health. In 2024, the hospital completed an expansion of the Lee and Susan Moss Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The facility includes family sleep rooms, updated waiting areas and a redesigned NICU entrance to better support families during extended hospital stays.

From routine deliveries to high-risk pregnancies, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford brings together specialists, nurses and care teams to provide seamless care before, during and after childbirth. The enhanced Women's and Obstetric unit strengthens the hospital's ability to meet the growing needs of Rutherford County while continuing its legacy as the place where generations of local families begin their stories.

For nearly a century, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital has been part of some of life's most meaningful moments. This expansion creates a welcoming environment where families can begin their next chapter with access to advanced care, modern amenities and the support they need from pregnancy through delivery and beyond.
