For nearly 45 years, Carmel Fire Department Division Chief John Moriarty has been the one responding to emergencies. But on his 66th birthday, the veteran firefighter found himself in urgent need of help.
What felt like severe heartburn quickly intensified into a chest tightness "like a vise." Prompted by his wife, Lori Ann, Moriarty arrived at Ascension St. Vincent, where an electrocardiogram (ECG) confirmed he was suffering an active heart attack.
From the moment he stepped through the doors, Moriarty witnessed his care team move with rapid, coordinated precision—while never losing sight of the human touch.
While physicians rushed him into immediate treatment to restore blood flow, a nurse stayed by Lori Ann’s side, walking her through every step of the emergency procedure.
"To see my wife cry bothered me more than anything," Moriarty recalled. "Watching the care team stay beside her, explaining everything as it happened—I thought that was beautiful. The level of care we received was incredible."
Ascension St. Vincent cardiologist Dr. Ezequiel Munoz credits Lori Ann's quick thinking and the emergency team's rapid response for the positive outcome.
"The prompt recognition of his symptoms played a major role in his recovery and made the procedure safer and more straightforward," said Dr. Munoz. "His return to the fire department after such a significant cardiac event speaks volumes about his resilience."
Thanks to the swift intervention at Ascension St. Vincent, Moriarty made a remarkable recovery—returning to full duty just one week later to mentor a new class of fire recruits. Today, he uses his story to remind others never to ignore subtle warning signs like chest burning, paleness, or unusual pressure.
