New mom receives specialized care for postpartum hypertension

New mom receives specialized care for postpartum hypertension

A healthy pregnancy and a beautiful new baby—then an unexpected health scare changed everything.

After delivering her son, Maggie Sharum, returned to the Ascension St. John Medical Center OB Emergency Room with dangerously high blood pressure. What began as a frightening and unexpected postpartum complication became a reminder of the importance of having specialized care available when mothers need it most.

With the support of the Ascension St. John team, including cardiologist Dr. Addison McGinn, Maggie received the care, reassurance, and follow-up she needed to get her health back on track. Today, she’s feeling like herself again and enjoying life with her baby boy.

Her story highlights something we believe deeply: caring for moms doesn’t end when baby arrives. From 24/7 OB emergency care to specialized maternal heart care, Ascension St. John is here to support mothers before, during and after pregnancy.
