Phipps Named Senior VP

Bonnie Phipps has accepted a new role as Senior Vice President, Ascension Health, Group Operating Executive, effective May 1, 2015. In this role Phipps directly oversees the Presidents of seven Ministry Markets of Ascension Health: Amsterdam, New York; Baltimore; Binghamton, New York; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Lewiston, Idaho; Pasco, Washington; and Washington, D.C. Ascension Health is the healthcare delivery subsidiary of Ascension, the nation’s largest non-profit and Catholic health system.

As Group Operating Executive, Phipps will provide both strategic and operations-related leadership for these Ministry Markets, including effective partnerships with other healthcare systems, physician groups and community organizations.

“This change is part of our national health ministry’s journey to One Ascension,” said Patricia A. Maryland, Dr.PH, President, Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer, Ascension Health. “These Ministry Markets generally are single-hospital providers focused on providing high-value, differentiated services to meet community needs in a sustainable fashion. The new grouping is designed to improve our ability to care for patients and engage with communities, bringing the Ministry Markets in closer alignment with Ascension and with each other.”

Phipps had served as Ministry Market Leader over the Ascension Health Ministries in Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Kansas City, Missouri; Pasco, Washington; and Lewiston, Idaho, in addition to serving as President and CEO of Saint Agnes HealthCare in Baltimore. Patrick Mutch, Saint Agnes Executive Vice President, Physician and Strategic Services, will serve as interim President and CEO of Saint Agnes while a national search is conducted for a new leader for that Ministry Market. Stuart Marcus, MD, FACS, who has been Ministry Market Leader for New York and Connecticut, continues to serve as President and CEO of St. Vincent’s Health Services in Bridgeport. “I want to thank Dr. Marcus for the tremendous contributions he has provided as Ministry Market Leader and for his ongoing leadership in the important Bridgeport Ministry Market,” Dr. Maryland said. Phipps continues to report to Dr. Maryland.

Prior to joining Saint Agnes in January 2006, Phipps served as the President and CEO of Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. She also served as the President and CEO of PROMINA Health System and as the Chief Financial Officer at DeKalb Medical Center and Egleston Children’s Hospital, also in Atlanta.

Phipps holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, summa cum laude, from Georgia State University, and a master’s degree in professional accountancy, also from Georgia State University. She is a certified public accountant, certified managed care professional and a fellow in the Healthcare Financing Management Association (HFMA). She served as National Chairman of HFMA in 1992 to 1993, and received the Morgan Award, the highest award given by the HFMA, for individual contributions to the industry in 1996.

Phipps serves on multiple boards and has been a faculty member on several national programs. She was inducted into the Georgia State University Business Hall of Fame in 2005.

“I want to congratulate Bonnie on her new role and thank her for continuing to serve our integrated national health ministry,” Dr. Maryland said.
