When the Pope addresses a joint session of Congress on Thursday, one of the guests listening intently in the gallery will be Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ascension.
Dr. Tersigni was invited by Rep. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., whose district includes Ascension’s St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, New York.
In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Dr. Tersigni says he believes the Pope “is going to reawaken us to the fact that he would like us to replace the materialism, the individualism, the pursuit of constant pleasure, with sacrifice and compassion and a solidarity of working for a common good.” The Vatican’s main mission, Dr. Tersigni believes, is “to lead a kind and compassionate global parish, with the poor at the center of everything we do” – which is consistent with Ascension’s Mission commitment to be an advocate for a compassionate and just society.

In addition to Dr. Tersigni’s attendance at the Pope’s address, several associates from across Ascension – including from Michigan, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin – will be on West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol when the Pope speaks there after his remarks to Congress.
