Saint Agnes Healthcare Diabetes Center Receives Full Recognition from the Centers for Disease Control

Saint Agnes Healthcare’s Diabetes Center at the Maryland Metabolic Institute has received Centers for Disease Control Full Recognition for its diabetes prevention program. Full Recognition status honors programs that use a CDC-approved curriculum which meets the duration, intensity, and reporting requirements described in the Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) Standards.

Saint Agnes’ Diabetes Center at the Maryland Metabolic Institute is one of only three programs in Baltimore City to achieve full CDC recognition.

“The Diabetes Center at the Maryland Metabolic Institute is proud to offer our patients and community the highest quality program to help reduce the burden of diabetes,” said Allison MacKenzie, Director, Community Health, Saint Agnes. “Diabetes is tied into many other chronic conditions that impact our patients’ lives. Full recognition status reflects the years of hard work by our team to help create a healthier community.”

Saint Agnes’ free National Diabetes Prevention Program runs for 12 months. The classes feature an hour of instruction and discussion on proper nutrition, physical activity, stress, healthy lifestyle challenges and more. Unique to Saint Agnes, participants also partake in a 60-minute fitness class following instruction, which helps jumpstart individuals in meeting their recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. The goal of the program is to help participants prevent developing type 2 diabetes, and to accomplish that, participants aim to lose at least 5 percent of their body weight and to stay active.

“It is immensely gratifying to see the science of diabetes prevention being implemented to improve the public’s health,” said Ann Albright, PhD, RDN, Director, Division of Diabetes Translation, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The sustained success of Saint Agnes Healthcare’s lifestyle change program makes an invaluable contribution to the prevention of type 2 diabetes, both in its community and nationally.”

The Maryland Metabolic Institute at Saint Agnes offers comprehensive services in bariatrics, diabetes care and wound care. Saint Agnes’ multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, dietitians and certified diabetes educators provides expert care to help patients manage, treat and understand their disease to help avoid complications and enjoy a great quality of life. The Diabetes Center offers programs for individual and group diabetes education, diabetes nutrition consultation, and gestational diabetes management.
