Ascension to empower students through grants student showcase events in 2020

Recognizing the importance of preparing young students in their pursuit of high-demand degrees and careers, especially in healthcare, Ascension has partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to bring student showcase events to three Ministry Markets in 2020.

Events showcasing projects from biomedical classes will be held at Ascension Seton in Austin, Texas; Ascension St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, Florida; and Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. Top student teams will be awarded $500 scholarships and matching $500 scholarships will go to their schools. Students’ showcase projects will be judged by Ascension associates in each market based on criteria such as quality of research, creativity, innovation, collaboration and presentation.

“The mission of Project Lead the Way aligns well with Ascension’s Mission and commitment to build a just and compassionate society,” said Nick Ragone, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Ascension, who is on the Board of Directors of PLTW. “Seeing kids apply the things they learn in their biomed courses to solve real-world problems and create new solutions to challenges we face in healthcare is extremely gratifying. These kids could go on to be an Ascension doctor or nurse or a future CEO of Ascension, and we want to help them on their journey.”

In addition to hosting student showcase events and providing scholarships, Ascension has given Project Lead the Way a grant to support the development of interactive, game-based simulations for educational learning in the classroom. The simulations will have an emphasis on ethical reasoning and critical thinking, two skills that are essential when it comes to providing quality and compassionate, personalized healthcare.

Project Lead the Way is a nonprofit organization that empowers students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills. PLTW also provides teacher training and resources to support teachers as they engage their students in real-life learning.
