NPR’s ‘Marketplace’ shares story of female Ascension cardiac surgeon

In December several media outlets ran stories about Amber Edwards, MD, the first female cardiac surgeon at Ascension Saint Thomas Heart in Nashville, Tennessee.

Now her story has been picked up by Marketplace, a nonprofit news network organization heard on National Public Radio.

In 2017, women comprised nearly a quarter of heart surgery residents and fellows. However, women account for only 7 percent of active surgeons.
