Hospital’s ‘Little Food Pantry’ helps those struggling in Alabama

Associates at Ascension St. Vincent’s Blount in Oneonta, Alabama, are doing their part to address food insecurity by filling two “Free Little Food Pantry” boxes installed just outside the main entrance to the hospital.

The boxes are repurposed old newspaper vending machines where people are invited to take what they need and leave what they can. Thanks to this effort, Oneonta residents now have a place to grab a few food items if they are struggling. In the first few weeks since their installation, the boxes have seen quite a bit of use.

“With the economy the way it is, we started this food pantry because there wasn't anything like it on this side of town,” said Greg Brown, Hospital Administrator. "Our associates and community members help stock it in the morning and by the next day it’s empty again.”
