Skilled cardiothoracic surgeon hired in collaboration between Cincinnati Children’s and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital

 Dr. Roosevelt Bryant III

Oct. 23, 2024 – Cincinnati Children’s and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent have jointly recruited a skilled cardiothoracic surgeon as part of a collaboration to enhance pediatric cardiology services in the Indianapolis region.

Roosevelt Bryant III, MD, will be based in Indianapolis as chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Bryant’s first day in this role will be Nov. 18, 2024.

In addition, Bryant will be a faculty member in cardiovascular surgery with the Cincinnati Children’s Heart Institute. He also will be a clinical professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

“Dr. Roosevelt Bryant is a highly skilled surgeon whose medical expertise and experience help cement this collaboration to bring world-class congenital heart surgery and cardiac care closer to home for patients and families in Indiana,” said David Morales, MD, director of cardiothoracic surgery at Cincinnati Children’s and executive co-director of its Heart Institute. “Working with the outstanding physicians, nurses and staff at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Dr. Bryant will provide expert care so that certain patients in the Indianapolis region can have complex heart surgery done locally.

“At the same time, Cincinnati Children’s is one of the few places in the country to offer innovative procedures such as complex biventricular repairs and total artificial heart implantation, and this collaboration will increase access to these rare procedures for the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital community,” Morales said. “Joint case conferences of eight or more surgeons, 60 pediatric cardiologists and other specialists at our two health systems will determine the optimal site of care for conditions that require such unique surgical strategies.”

Stephan Masoncup, JD, chief strategy officer for Ascension St. Vincent, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Bryant, a prominent cardiothoracic surgeon, as part of our initiative to enhance the pediatric cardiology services throughout our statewide ministry. Ensuring world-class care is provided to all our patients, including patients with complex cardiac conditions such as those with congenital heart issues, is our primary objective. This collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s will ensure children throughout our region will have access to the level of care they need, when and where they need it.”

Bryant said he welcomes this opportunity because of the commitment of Ascension St. Vincent and Cincinnati Children’s to provide the highest-quality care for the patients they serve.

“I look forward to working closely with Dr. Leonard Steinberg, medical director for pediatric cardiology, and the entire team at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital,” Bryant said. “Our top priority will be safe, thoughtful care for our patients in an environment where every family feels welcome and valued.”

Bryant originally joined Cincinnati Children’s in 2013 as a pediatric cardiac surgeon, and from 2014-19 he served as surgical director of the Heart Transplant Program at Cincinnati Children’s. During that time, he was named a “Top Doctor” for cardiac care by Cincinnati Magazine.

Most recently, Bryant was surgical director for heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (2019-24), where he also served as surgical director of quality for its Heart Center and solid organ transplantation. Bryant was also a professor in the Department of Child Health at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. During that time, he was named a “Top Doctor” for cardiovascular surgery by Phoenix Magazine.

Previously, Bryant was a faculty member, a pediatric cardiac surgeon and the surgical director of heart transplantation at Masonic Children’s Hospital at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, where he worked 2009-13.

Bryant received a medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine after graduating from Dillard University in New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2004, where he served as chief resident. He trained in adult thoracic and cardiothoracic surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic (2004-07), where he served as chief resident for adult cardiac surgery. A fellowship culminated in two years of congenital heart surgery training at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston (2007-09).
