The Importance of Neurocritical Care: Saving Lives and Enhancing Recovery in Central Texas

In a Catholic Health Association article, Dr. Shahed Toossi, Medical Director of Neurocritical Care Unit at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas and Meredith Wells, Vice President of Neuroscience Service Line, Ascension Texas, emphasize the importance of neurocritical care units in Central Texas for improving outcomes and saving lives of patients experiencing severe neurological emergencies like stroke, brain hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury.

Dell Seton Medical Center opened its neurocritical care unit in 2023, the first of its kind in Central Texas. In 2024, it was expanded to increase patient capacity with an additional 15 beds, for a total of 30 beds, and allow for the treatment of a greater spectrum of neurological conditions, ranging from low acuity, to the most complex and highly acute cases.
