April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

Ascension Saint Thomas Leads the Way in Compassionate, Innovative Care

April marks Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the importance of early detection, cutting-edge treatment, and compassionate care for patients. At Ascension Saint Thomas, Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Ryan Hendrix and his team are dedicated to providing world-class treatment for esophageal cancer, ensuring patients receive the best possible care with a focus on innovation and empathy.

"The most important thing to me is establishing a connection with patients," says Dr. Hendrix. "Patients are oftentimes at a very vulnerable point in their care, and being empathetic, understanding, and listening is definitely part of our approach."

Dr. Hendrix and his team utilize advanced, minimally invasive techniques, including state-of-the-art robotics, to diagnose and treat abnormal cells in the esophagus—the tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach. Through robotic bronchoscopy, they can perform precise diagnoses in a minimally invasive manner, allowing for better decision-making regarding surgical interventions.

As pioneers in advanced treatment, Ascension Saint Thomas is proud to be the first program in the state to perform robotic tracheobronchoplasty, a groundbreaking procedure used to address tracheobronchomalacia - a rare condition that occurs when windpipe, or trachea, tissue is weak. These innovations contribute to the hospital’s mission of delivering cutting-edge, patient-centered care.

Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month serves as a critical reminder for individuals to be aware of risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of early detection. Ascension Saint Thomas encourages the community to seek regular screenings and consultations if they experience symptoms such as persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.
