Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside adds non-invasive therapy to remove tumors

St. Vincent’s Riverside has added new technology to remove tumors through the use of non-invasive, ultrasound therapy.

Histotripsy is a focused ultrasound that uses high amplitude, very short pulses to create a “bubble cloud” that is designed to destroy and liquefy targeted liver tumors. St. Vincent’s Riverside is the only hospital in Northeast Florida to use this technology.

“We are committed to strategic growth and the expansion of complex care, all to improve the patient experience and their outcomes,” said Scott Kashman, President & CEO of St. Vincent's Riverside. “Our cancer patients are among our most vulnerable; this non-invasive technology will give them the benefit of treatment without incisions.”

Histotripsy is delivered through the use of The Edison System, which delivers pulsed sound energy into the body. This energy induces “bubble clouds” from gases naturally present in targeted tissue. These form and collapse in microseconds, creating mechanical forces strong enough to destroy tissue at cellular and sub-cellular levels in a non-invasive and non-thermal method.
It does this without any incisions or needles, and has the ability to destroy tumors at the sub-cellular level, all while the treating physician continuously monitors the “bubble cloud” and treatment effect in real-time.
