Ascension Illinois is excited to announce that one of its facilities, Ascension Saint Alexius, has been recognized as one of the best hospitals in Illinois for patient safety. Saint Alexius is joined by just 17 other hospitals statewide. As reported in Patch this week, the recognition comes as part of Healthgrades’ annual award announcements, which includes facility-wide and service-line-specific recognitions for hundreds of hospitals across the United States. Healthgrades is one of the key digital resources for information about physicians and hospitals in the U.S. This is the second time in three years Saint Alexius has been recognized with this award.
This Patient Safety Excellence Award recognizes hospitals which are in the top 10% in the nation for patient safety and which have the lowest occurrences of 13 preventable patient safety events. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated at recipient hospitals are less likely to experience some of the following safety events compared to patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:
- In-hospital fall resulting in fracture
- Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest
- Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital
Saint Alexius has earned a number distinctions from other awards groups over the past few years. Last year, the hospital was named a top maternity hospital in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report, and it earned a “high-performing” distinction from U.S. News & World Report for its treatment of knee replacement and heart failure. The hospital is also certified as a National Safe Sleep Hospital by Cribs for Kids, demonstrating that the care adheres to strict American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for safe sleep.
