Ascension Alexian Brothers, Ascension Resurrection Recognized as State Leaders for Heart, Lung, Stroke Care

Ascension Alexian Brothers and Ascension Resurrection were ranked among the top hospitals in the state for various areas of specialty care for stroke, heart and lungs, according to a new analysis released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

According to the new rankings, Ascension Alexian Brothers was rated among the top five hospitals in Illinois for cardiac surgery, stroke care and pulmonary care. Ascension Resurrection was ranked among the top five for coronary intervention and stroke care.

For the state ranking analysis, Healthgrades evaluated the clinical performance of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide, focusing on eight key specialties across a mix of chronic, urgent and planned clinical areas.

“We’re thrilled to be so highly ranked by Healthgrades for these important areas of care,” said Dr. Rick Scott, chief clinical officer for Ascension Illinois. “These recognitions highlight the importance all our hospitals place on quality and patient safety. The physicians, nurses and staff at Ascension Alexian Brothers and Ascension Resurrection stand ready to care for their communities.”

According to Healthgrades, those hospitals recognized as among the top ranked in their state are providing patients with measurably superior clinical outcomes. Using an analysis of MedPAR data for years 2018 through 2020, representing three-year estimates for Medicare patients only, patients treated at hospitals ranked have, on average, a lower risk of dying than if they were treated in an unranked hospital for:

  • Cardiac surgery, a 51.4% lower risk
  • Pulmonary care, a 51.1% lower risk
  • Coronary intervention, a 48.6% lower risk
  • Stroke care, a 38.4% lower risk

Access to quality information can inform and empower consumers in their decision-making process and direct them to the best care, officials from Healthgrades said, which is why the organization is committed to delivering the most scientifically accurate and comprehensive information about doctors and hospitals with data insights not available elsewhere.

“Being recognized among the top in Illinois for in these areas of care is a great achievement that speaks to Ascension Alexian Brothers’ and Ascension Resurrection’s ongoing commitment to high-quality care. Hospitals receiving a top state ranking have much to be proud of as their deep medical expertise has built a track record of delivering positive outcomes for their patients," said Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer and head of data science for Healthgrades. “For almost 25 years, our mission has been to provide consumers with clear and accessible information to make more informed healthcare decisions. Patients can feel confident knowing that they have access to top ranked care for cardiac surgery, coronary intervention, stroke and pulmonary care at these Ascension hospitals.”
