A Message to the Community from Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital

Dear neighbors,

As an organization committed to safety and quality, Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s is actively working to strengthen and grow our workforce, particularly our nursing community, in the present and for the future.

Healthcare systems and caregivers have experienced dramatic change in the last year, both here in Milwaukee and across the country. The U.S. healthcare system is facing a staffing crisis. There are many reasons for this, including exhaustion and burnout from COVID-19 cases and related deaths, a surge of retirements, and fewer young people entering healthcare professions.

While this is happening at hospitals across the nation, it’s important to remember that our care teams are saving lives and caring for people in need every day.

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s has earned clinical designations and awards that reflect our commitment to quality and our consistent clinical excellence over an extended period of time. Most recently, Healthgrades™ included us among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2023 and 2022, which puts us in the top 2% of hospitals in the country. Healthgrades has also recognized our hospital as being among the 100 best in the nation for Critical Care and Gastrointestinal Care (2023, 2022, 2021). Other awards for excellence include Stroke Care, Pulmonary Care, and Cranial Neurosurgery.

In addition, we maintain a number of clinical designations and have earned awards that reflect our commitment to quality, including:

  • The Joint Commission accreditation
  • American College of Cardiology Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Resuscitation designation
  • American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation as an Integrated Network Cancer Program
  • National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditation
  • Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
  • American College of Surgeons Burn Certification
  • American Community Cancer Centers Innovation Award recipient
  • American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Award recipient

These quality awards are a reflection of our doctors and nurses and everyone who touches the lives of patients while in our care. We’re grateful to our associates and affiliated clinicians for their ongoing dedication and commitment.

We are proud of our talented and compassionate care teams and humbled to care for the people of Milwaukee and beyond.

We are committed to supporting our teams and providing you and your loved ones with safe, high-quality care now and into the future.
