Via Christi, City of Wichita Partner to Protect Firefighter Health

Firefighters risk their lives everyday to protect us. In doing so, they face not just immediate job-related danger, but long-term health risks like cancer, heart disease and lung disease. Research shows firefighters face a significantly higher risk of these illnesses due to job-related exposures. That’s why Via Christi, the City of Wichita and IAFF Local 135 Wichita Firefighters came together to launch a proactive health initiative dedicated to early detection and prevention.

Through this program, Via Christi will provide active and retired City of Wichita firefighters and investigators convenient access to annual cancer screenings, cardiac and pulmonary testing, and wellness exams. Program participants will also have a dedicated nurse navigator to guide them through the process. The initiative’s objective is to provide firefighters the support and resources needed to catch potential health concerns before they become serious.
