Ascension Florida is leading the way in healthcare investing in state-of-the-art surgical robots for five hospitals

Ascension Florida is bringing the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system to Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast, Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside, Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside and Ascension St. Vincent’s St. Johns County. This is the second da Vinci 5 for St. Vincent’s Riverside. 

This system allows surgeons to control customizable instruments with greater accuracy, making it easier to perform surgeries with smaller incisions. This technology increases access to minimally invasive robotic surgery for our community, leading to better results, quicker recovery times and improved patient care. 

“The da Vinci 5 reflects our commitment to providing state-of-the-art technologies that increase our patients' quality of care and experience at our hospitals,” said Don King, President and CEO of Ascension Florida. “Our surgeons and care teams look forward to utilizing the system’s best-in-class capabilities to improve the health of those in our community who need it most.”

The new system features more than 150 enhancements, including:

  • Enhanced ability for the surgeon to feel subtle differences in tissue which can help improve precision 
  • Improved image processing with a next-generation 3D display that gives surgeons a clearer, more detailed view during surgery 
  • Increased use for more complex and a wider variety of procedures to be done using minimally invasive procedures

“The da Vinci 5 will enhance our ability to offer the highest quality of care with a minimally invasive approach for our patients,” said Dr. Syed Jafri, Chief Clinical Officer of Ascension Florida. “This means patients will likely experience superior outcomes with less scarring and a faster recovery, allowing patients to return to their families sooner.”

Surgeons will use the da Vinci 5 for various complex procedures, treating both benign and malignant conditions. This includes gynecologic and urologic surgeries, certain cancer surgeries, and general procedures like gallbladder removal, bariatric surgery, and hernia repair. Surgeons stay in full control of all operations, supported by 3D vision and wrist movement capabilities.

Across Ascension Florida hospitals, surgeons have performed close to 40,000 procedures using da Vinici surgical systems.
