Ascension St. Vincent’s St. Johns County expands heart imaging services

St. Vincent’s St. Johns County is expanding its heart imaging services to more effectively detect heart disease and eliminate the need for stress tests or heart cath for most patients.

A cardiovascular CT scan is a non-invasive, 3D screening tool that takes only minutes to complete, allowing St. Vincent’s cardiologists to better observe how the heart functions and pumps blood.

“We’re dedicated to growing alongside our community and expanding the cardiovascular services that our neighbors need,” said Cory Darling, President and CEO of St. Vincent’s St. Johns County. “Providing access to state-of-the-art heart imaging aligns with our commitment to keeping healthcare local and allowing our patients to receive care with the providers they trust.”

The procedure uses X-ray to create 3D images of the heart, blood vessels and surrounding structures. These high-quality images can detect blockages, plaque buildup and other issues that could indicate heart disease or other problems, in some cases before patients are symptomatic.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in Florida. One person dies every 33 seconds across the United States.

“Earlier and more accurate detection of heart disease allows us to treat patients more effectively and support them in managing their condition,” said Dr. Lucien Abboud, cardiologist at St. Vincent’s. “We’re excited to expand access to this advanced imaging technology and help save more lives in our rapidly growing community.”
