Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel meant to carry oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked or bursts. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.
In the United States, more than 35 million people have diabetes, and 98 million adults are considered at a high risk. Diabetes is one of the key causes of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations and ophthalmological issues among adults. Type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of stroke due to its impact on blood vessels. High blood glucose levels in diabetes can damage blood vessels, making them prone to blockages.
Alexian Brothers houses a comprehensive stroke center which provides some of the most advanced neurological care options in the area. Alexian Brothers also employs specialists in endocrine disorders and diabetes ready to provide the best personalized care for each patient’s diabetes needs including options like nutrition counseling and diabetes education.
