Ascension Seton Hays recognized among the nation’s top 10% for quality and safety

Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle, Texas, has been recognized among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for its commitment to quality, safety and compassionate care after receiving a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of the 2025 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

To honor this remarkable achievement, hospital leadership, associates, providers, elected officials and community members gathered on November 6 to celebrate the recognition together, hosted by the Ascension Seton Hays Foundation. Smiles, applause and gratitude filled the room as the team reflected on the dedication and teamwork that made the award possible.

“This award represents the top 10 percent of hospitals in the U.S.,” said Chief Medical Officer at Ascension Seton Hays Joshua Pozos, MD, . “It can’t be accomplished without the dedication of so many—our nurses, physicians, senior leaders and partners who make patient safety and quality their daily mission.”

The recognition places Ascension Seton Hays among an elite group of hospitals nationwide, following a review of more than 3,000 facilities. Ascension Seton Hays is the only hospital in Hays County to earn this distinction, reaffirming its dedication for delivering exceptional care close to home.

The CMS ratings are based on several key measures, including patient experience, hospital-acquired infections, readmissions, safety indicators and inpatient mortality. Across these categories, Ascension Seton Hays consistently achieved results that exceed national averages—outcomes made possible by a shared culture of compassion and excellence.

This marks the third time in four years that Ascension Seton Hays has earned a five-star rating, a distinction achieved by fewer than 15 percent of hospitals nationwide.

“This recognition is about more than numbers—it’s about people,” Dr. Pozos said. “It’s about the patients who trust us with their care and the dedicated associates who show up every day committed to providing the best possible experience. We are so proud to celebrate this moment together as one team serving our community.”

Coordinated cardiac care saves 35-year-old father

Nicholas Gegan woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air and then collapsed. Startled awake, his wife began CPR on her husband to keep him alive while calling for an ambulance. The 35-year-old father of two had gone into cardiac arrest without warning. Emergency crews rushed Nicholas to Ascension Seton Hays (ASH) and the care team quickly realized he needed Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), where a machine pumps and oxygenates his blood, to save his life.
