Ascension Alexian Brothers vascular surgeon Dr. Georges Haidar performed the hospital’s first implantation of the Barostim Baroreflex Activation Therapy device, marking an important milestone in advanced heart failure care. This is the first Barostim procedure within Ascension Illinois and the first offered in the northwest suburbs.
Barostim works by activating the body’s natural baroreflex pathway, using signals from the nervous system to help regulate heart function and reduce symptoms in patients whose heart failure is not adequately controlled with medications alone.
Cardiologists Dr. Ashish Haryani and Dr. Baqir Lakhani will lead efforts in identifying appropriate candidates and provide follow-up care for patients who may benefit from this therapy.
“Although we have good medicines to treat heart failure, some patients do not tolerate the recommended doses of guideline-directed medical therapy due to side effects,” said Dr. Haryani. “Barostim is an innovative treatment option for patients who continue to have symptoms after we have optimized medical therapy. It helps restore balance to the autonomic nervous system, allowing patients to walk farther and feel better.”
This therapy offers eligible patients the potential for improved quality of life, fewer symptoms and a greater ability to return to daily activities.
