Miracle in 85 Days: Highlighting the Ascension Sacred Heart Kidney Transplant Program

Nine years after becoming the first kidney transplant program in Northwest Florida, the Ascension Sacred Heart Transplant Program continues to deliver life-changing care for patients throughout the region and beyond. A recent patient's journey from chronic decline to a second chance at life exemplifies our commitment to compassionate, comprehensive kidney transplant services.

The foundation of preemptive care

Patricia T.’s journey began with her primary care physician, Dr. Gerardo Dieguez Gomez, who managed her care as her kidney function steadily declined for seven years.

“Dr. Gomez really stayed on top of the issue, carefully watching my levels during my regular visits”, said Patricia. “His attention to detail and referral saved my life.”

When it dropped to a critical 20%, Dr. Gomez referred Patricia to a nephrologist and the transplant clinic, a crucial step that set her miracle in motion.

Specialized care for a complex case

Patricia began her care with the Transplant Center team, which has been serving the community since 2016. At 68, Patricia presented a complex case due to high antibodies, a condition that typically prolongs the wait because only about 4% of potential donors nationwide would be compatible.

Her condition qualified for a national kidney allocation program that shares organs across the country when an exceptionally strong match is identified.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the call that there was a perfect match,” said Patricia. “God had his hand in it and I am so grateful for this miracle.”

Remarkably, after only 85 days on the waiting list, a perfectly matched donor kidney became available and was transported to Ascension Sacred Heart for her transplant. This rare match allowed her to receive a lifesaving transplant before ever needing dialysis.

Excellence in surgery and recovery

The procedure was a success. During her seven-day hospital stay, she experienced the dedication of the support staff.

“Elizabeth “Liz” Lessman, pharmacist and the clinic staff were amazing, providing me with consistent support every step of the way, listening and answering all of my questions”, Patricia said.

Patricia also benefited from daily wound care and the constant support of her family, reflecting the partnership we build with patient support systems.

A life transformed

Since her surgery in 2021, Patricia’s quality of life has dramatically improved.

“Before the transplant, I struggled with shortness of breath and weakness”, said Patricia. “Now, I walk three miles a day and have the strength to care for my husband.”

Just six months post-procedure, she flew to Dallas to spend time with her grandchildren — a true measure of a renewed life.

Patricia’s story is a powerful reminder that miracles happen here. She’s grateful for the comprehensive, seamless care she received close to home. Patricia said Dr. Douglas Keith and Dr. Gomez, whom she cherishes like "family," embody our commitment to the community’s health.

“I wouldn’t be here without the selfless choice of the donor and their family”, Patricia said. “I think about them often and the strength and kindness it took to make a decision like this in such a difficult time.”

Patricia expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the gift that helped her and many others. She also encourages patients on the waitlist to stay strong and keep praying because miracles do happen.
