Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago recognized for high-quality bariatric surgery program

Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago is excited to announce that it has been recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) as a Blue Distinction Center for its Bariatric Surgery program.

All facilities recognized as Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery have proven that they deliver higher quality care under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program’s standards for bariatric procedures. On average, designated facilities have 37% fewer total complications for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and 14% fewer total complications for gastric bypass compared to non-accredited facilities.

By meeting these criteria, Saint Joseph has demonstrated a strong commitment to higher-quality care and remains at the forefront of bariatric surgery advancement.

“Weight-loss surgery is such a deeply personal, life-changing decision,” said Dr. Richard Zhu, bariatric surgeon at Saint Joseph. “Our entire bariatrics team is incredible at providing patients with an individual approach to weight-loss care, and it comes at no surprise that they have been recognized for the quality of care they provide.”

Existing since 2005, Blue Distinction Centers designations help potential patients find quality for their specialty care needs, while also encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall delivery of care nationwide.

At Saint Joseph, the bariatric care team helps guide and support patients through every step of their treatment journey. The team of surgical weight-loss specialists includes surgeons, nurse navigators, dietitians, exercise physiologists, behavioral health support and an insurance coordinator.

The care team is dedicated to helping patients understand surgical and non-surgical treatment options and lifestyle changes, and offers weight-loss seminars for those interested.
