Via Christi Therapy Center on McCall and Via Christi Therapy Center on Seth Child in Manhattan have introduced a specialized, multidisciplinary therapy program designed to treat concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries across all age groups, from pediatric patients to older adults. The initiative is the only program of its kind in Manhattan to combine physical, occupational and speech therapy into a coordinated pathway for concussion care.
Research shows that addressing symptoms early with a guided return to activity is critical for long-term recovery from concussions, particularly for individuals experiencing post-injury symptoms lasting longer than seven to 10 days. The new program focuses on early intervention to alleviate lingering deficits, prevent prolonged disability and accelerate a safe return to daily life.
"Every brain injury is unique, impacting everything from physical balance to reading comprehension and mental stamina,” said Eric Melander, Director of Rehab Therapy. “By bringing physical, occupational and speech therapy together in a coordinated treatment plan, we can pinpoint specific deficits early and guide patients of all ages through a safe, structured return to school, sports and work."
The program delivers individualized care plans tailored to each patient's specific symptoms:
- Physical therapy targets balance, coordination, dizziness, neck pain and exercise intolerance.
- Occupational therapy focuses on visual and sensory challenges that disrupt everyday routines.
- Speech therapy addresses cognitive and communication challenges through restorative rehabilitation and compensatory strategies.
Patients experiencing persistent symptoms following a head impact such as recurrent headaches, dizziness, vision changes, brain fog or difficulty keeping up with work and school demands are encouraged to seek an evaluation.
Referrals can be coordinated through primary care providers, pediatricians, urgent care or emergency departments. The clinics also accept self-referrals, but not all insurance provides coverage without a referral.
