Women with a family history of breast cancer, inherited genetic mutations or other risk factors may need more than routine breast cancer screening. Ascension Saint Thomas offers the PINK program, a specialized high-risk breast health program that helps women understand their individual risk and develop personalized plans for prevention, early detection and long-term breast health.
PINK is designed for women who have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, including those with a family history of the disease, known genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, a history of abnormal breast biopsies or previous radiation exposure to the chest.
Through the program, breast specialists assess each woman's risk factors and help determine her lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Based on those findings, a breast-certified women's health nurse practitioner helps patients navigate recommended screenings, preventive care and ongoing monitoring.
"Understanding your breast cancer risk is an important step in taking control of your breast health," said Dr. Lisa Bellin, a breast surgeon with Ascension Saint Thomas. "For women with elevated risk, routine screening recommendations may not be enough. The PINK program helps identify those risks and provides a personalized approach to screening, prevention and early detection."
Personalized care for women at increased risk
The PINK program offers a comprehensive approach to high-risk breast health, including:
- Risk assessments: Evaluations of personal and family medical history to determine individual breast cancer risk.
- Advanced imaging: Additional screening options, including breast MRI when appropriate, alongside mammography.
- Genetic counseling and testing: Evaluation for inherited mutations, including BRCA1, BRCA2 and other breast cancer-related genes.
- Clinical breast exams: Additional monitoring based on individual risk.
- Preventive care and education: Guidance on lifestyle considerations and risk-reducing therapies.
- Navigation and support: Personalized guidance to help women understand their risk and recommended next steps.
Women at increased risk may benefit from more frequent screening or additional imaging. For some patients, this may include breast MRI in addition to mammography. Screening recommendations depend on individual risk factors and clinical guidance.
If breast cancer is detected, patients have access to Ascension Saint Thomas breast surgeons and cancer specialists who work together to develop an individualized treatment plan.
Knowing your risk matters
A family history of breast cancer or an inherited genetic mutation can increase a woman's likelihood of developing the disease. However, women do not always recognize their risk or know when to seek additional screening.
The PINK program gives women an opportunity to discuss those concerns with breast health specialists and take proactive steps toward managing their health.
Women interested in learning more about the program or scheduling a consultation can call 615-284-PINK (7465).
The PINK program is offered through Ascension Saint Thomas Medical Partners Midtown Breast Surgery, located at 2004 Hayes St., Suite 140, in Nashville.
