Ascension St. Vincent's Blount, located approximately one hour northeast of Birmingham, is a critical access hospital. The hospital has an emergency room, three clinics and a wellness center. In fiscal year 2023 the hospital provided more than $2 million in community service and charity care programs, while the Ascension St. Vincent's system in Alabama provided more than $29.4 million in community service and charity care.

Although Ascension St. Vincent's Blount is a small hospital and a small player in the 340B program, the services provided have a tremendous impact on the community. In fiscal year 2023, the 340B program helped to offset demand through supporting many of the programs below.

Ascension St. Vincent's Blount implemented 340B in January 2014. Since the program's implementation, it has used more than $1 million in benefits from the program to enhance services for the community.

Programs enabled by 340B benefits:

  • Medication affordability program: provides needed medications to uninsured and impoverished patients through copay assistance and purchasing diabetes meters and test strips.
  • Provider office affordability program: provides help to low-income patients who cannot afford the cost of doctor's office visits.
  • Charitable pharmacies: operates three Dispensary of Hope locations serving uninsured populations with free medication across the state.
  • Funds a school nurse's full-time salary at Hayden Middle School.
  • Provides medications for a community health fair at no cost.
  • Medical Mission at Home: historically held at least annually at multiple locations across the state, the event provides free medical, vision and dental services to those in need.
