Ascension Saint Thomas, the leading faith-based healthcare system in Tennessee, is a family of Middle Tennessee hospitals and physician practices united by a single Mission: to provide spiritually centered, holistic care that sustains and improves the health of the communities it serves. Ascension Saint Thomas also includes Saint Thomas Medical Partners, a physician-led medical group providing primary care, specialty services, medical imaging, outpatient services, and community-based medical practices throughout Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

Since 1964, Ascension Saint Thomas Hickman, a critical access hospital, has provided personalized care to those in Centerville and Hickman County. The hospital was the first in Tennessee to qualify as a critical access hospital. Ascension Saint Thomas Hickman serves a very vulnerable patient population and cares for roughly 10,000 people a year. Nearly 20 percent of patients seen at Ascension Saint Thomas Hickman Hospital do not have health insurance, and the closest hospital is about 30 miles away.

Since 1970, Ascension Saint Thomas River Park Hospital has provided personalized care to Middle Tennessee communities. Ascension Saint Thomas River Park Hospital serves more than 115,000 residents in an eight-county region, which includes Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Grundy, Sequatchie, Van Buren, Warren and White counties. The patients seen by Ascension Saint Thomas River Park Hospital are a vulnerable population, with nearly 14 percent lacking health insurance.

Since 1927, Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, a 420-licensed bed facility, has been a destination for specialty care including heart and vascular care, orthopedics, intensive care, maternal-fetal medicine, and obstetrics and maternity services.

Since 1961, Saint Thomas Three Rivers hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital, has provided personalized care to those in Humphreys county.

The $2.2M in savings from the 340B program in FY2023 helps Ascension Saint Thomas Hospitals stretch its resources to provide charity care services and serve the community.

Without the 340B program, the hospital would not be able to provide patients with the healthcare services they need at a price they can afford. In high-poverty, rural areas such as Warren County, many patients face several obstacles to receiving the care they need.

In FY2023, Ascension Saint Thomas Ministry provided a total of $180.9 million in uncompensated care.

Programs enhanced by 340B benefits:

• Medication affordability program: provides needed medications to uninsured and impoverished patients with both free and reduced-cost medications.
• Charitable clinics: expands access to charity clinic services to provide free and low-cost healthcare services.
• Charitable pharmacies: operates four Dispensary of Hope locations serving uninsured populations with free medication across the state.
• Medical Mission at Home: historically held at least annually at multiple locations across the state, the event provides free medical, vision, and dental services to those in need.
