Texas Covered Entities
In Texas, Ascension operates Ascension Providence and Ascension Seton, which includes Dell Children’s Medical Center, the region’s only comprehensive children’s hospital and pediatric Level I trauma center, and Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas at Austin, the region’s only Level I trauma center for adults. Ascension Seton partners with Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin and shares a common vision of transforming healthcare through a focus on quality and value.
Ascension Seton has participated in the 340B program for more than 12 years. Its participating hospitals are the first places those most in need turn for treatment. In fact, Dell Seton sees more uninsured patients than any other hospital in Central Texas.
Approximately 30-35% of people who seek care from Ascension Texas are uninsured, underinsured or have Medicaid. As the region's largest non-profit healthcare organization, Ascension Texas has provided over $5.6 billion in community benefits over the last ten years. The 340B program provided Ascension Texas approximately $20.9 million in savings in FY2023 which allowed the organization to continue providing services to the poor and vulnerable patients at no charge.
Its 340B benefits have helped the health system fund primary and specialty care clinics that serve those who are poor and vulnerable in urban and rural communities. In addition, these benefits help provide clinical and ambulatory pharmacy services, financial assistance to patients who are unable to afford their prescriptions and oncology services, and offset the cost of providing free medical care for the ever-increasing number of uninsured and underinsured patients.
Moreover, Ascension Seton’s benefits allow the system to reach more eligible patients within the community through different programs, including mobile primary care units in rural areas, embedded nurse services in the local school district, and Medical Missions.
Programs enhanced by 340B benefits:
- Medication affordability program: provides needed medications to uninsured and impoverished patients with both free and reduced-cost medications.
- Charitable pharmacies: operates four Dispensary of Hope locations serving uninsured populations with free medication across the state.
- Primary and specialty care clinics: provides services to those who are poor and vulnerable in urban and rural communities.
- Medical Mission at Home: historically held at least annually at multiple locations across the state, the event provides free medical, vision and dental services to those in need.
