Community Benefit & Charity Care

Across Ascension, we provide a healthcare safety net for millions of people who might otherwise go without healthcare – particularly those who are poor and uninsured.

Traditional charity care covers the cost of medical care provided to people who are unable to pay for services. Ascension’s commitment to charity care goes much further, ensuring every patient receives personalized care that meets their individual needs and unique personal circumstances, regardless of their ability to pay.

Through our community benefit programs, Ascension provides access to medical care beyond the walls of our hospitals and directly to individuals who need it most. We work in the communities we serve to improve access to care, enhance the health of communities, advance medical or healthcare knowledge and relieve the burden on other community efforts.

In delivering on our mission, we are dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care, which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities.

  • Ascension Michigan Community Benefit and Investment Program

    The Ascension Michigan Community Benefit and Investment Program (“CBI Program”) is a new program to centrally receive, review and process community investment requests submitted by external community partners. The CBI Program seeks to ensure Ascension Michigan hospitals, Ascension Medical Group Michigan and Ascension Michigan foundations continue to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to them by intentionally and strategically aligning external community investments with local (prioritized) community needs, as well as strategic and organizational priorities.

    Philosophy
    As a Ministry of the Catholic Church, Ascension Michigan hospitals have a well-documented tradition of caring for those most in need. Our Mission, Vision and Values provide a strong framework for the work we do in meeting the needs of the communities in which we serve and helping groups that have been historically marginalized or made vulnerable. Investing in and sponsoring local community programs is just one of the ways we demonstrate our commitment.

    The following beliefs shape our philosophy:

    • We believe groups that have been historically marginalized or made vulnerable have a moral priority for services;
    • We believe everyone has a responsibility to contribute, and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all; and
    • We believe in pursuing solutions that allow individuals and communities to achieve human and spiritual flourishing to better allow everyone to grow and achieve fulfillment in community.
