Four Via Christi Health doctors left Wichita, Kansas, in August to serve in Niger and Rwanda through Via Christi’s International Family Medicine Fellowship, a unique post-residency training program. During their five-month fellowship assignment, they’ll treat people with a lot of health issues but few doctors, medical supplies or equipment.
Although the ebola virus is in the news, the Via Christi doctors expect to treat other tropical diseases, such as malaria and parasitic diseases, as well as more common illnesses. When the doctors return to Kansas, they’ll complete additional hours of service in rural communities, which often have only one doctor, to continue helping people in need while gaining valuable medical training.
