Central Michigan University College of Medicine has signed a three-year agreement with St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, part of Ascension Michigan, to train future physicians who will provide high-quality healthcare to Michigan's underserved areas. With this agreement, 12 CMU students will conduct clinical rotations and community clerkships at the hospital in the 2015-16 school year.
"The agreement with St. John supplements our relationship with St. Mary's of Michigan, Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw and other affiliates around the state," CMU Provost Michael Gealt said. "This ensures we have full capacity for clinical rotation spots, a key component of medical education." St. Mary's of Michigan is also part of Ascension Michigan.
"St. John Hospital and Medical Center is very pleased to welcome CMU medical students to our clinical campus," said Steven Minnick, MD, Director of Medical Education at St. John. "We look forward to our partnership with CMU and supporting their important mission to train future physicians who will provide high-quality healthcare to Michigan's underserved areas."
The inaugural class of 64 College of Medicine students started in August 2013 and will begin third-year studies July 6.
"Our partners in Saginaw and our affiliates around the state have responded to our mission to provide quality physicians in underserved areas, and soon they will benefit from the drive and dedication to medicine our students have shown in their first two years," said George Kikano, MD, Dean of CMU's College of Medicine.
