One summer evening in 2007, Kevin Morton was shot outside a restaurant in the Detroit area after finishing his shift. Kevin, then 22 and a biochemistry student at Oakland University, was transported to St. John Hospital & Medical Center, part of Ascension Michigan, where his family was told he had less than a 10 percent chance of living due the extent of his injuries.
The trauma team worked hard to keep Kevin alive. After many surgeries and a 3-month hospital stay, Kevin was finally released to go home.
His experience during his hospital stay with staff and physicians played a major role in inspiring him to become a doctor and give back. In May, Kevin graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is due to begin his surgical residency program at Ascension Michigan’s St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital and will complete some rotations at St. John Hospital & Medical Center.
Dr. Morton has shared his inspiring story with the The Detroit News, NBC News and People magazine.
