At just 12 ounces, Logan Allen was the smallest baby to be born at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, part of Ascension Florida. The micro-preemie had less than a 30% chance of survival.
Logan’s mother, Talisa Jackson, was 24 weeks pregnant when her son was born on January 26.
“To be very honest, nobody was looking for my son to live,” Talisa told the Pensacola News-Journal.
A neonatal intensive care team was in the room when Logan was born, ready to provide immediate care.
"Our goal is to have everything stabilized and as quiet as possible within the first hour," said Ramak Amjad, MD, Medical Director of the NICU, Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart. “This is called the 'Golden Hour,' and it greatly improves outcomes.”
Since his birth, Logan has had laser eye surgery, treatment for cardio lung disease and has been on and off a ventilator numerous times. He now weighs 5 pounds, 8 ounces and has a few milestones to meet before he can leave the new Level III NICU that’s been his home since May.
"He's my strength,” his mother, Talisa, said. “When I'm having a bad day or I just need to take a breather I can go look at him and be like 'OK, this little guy has gone through a lot, whatever I'm going through is small.’”
