Ascension Advocacy leaders address health plan issues

Members of the Ascension Advocacy Ministry-wide Function spoke at the most recent Kansas Cancer Partnership annual meeting, held in Hutchinson, Kansas, at the end of July.

Bruce Witt, Ascension Via Christi Chief Advocacy Officer, and Brock Ingmire, Ascension Manager of State Policy and Advocacy, joined a panel with faculty from Georgetown University’s Center on Health Insurance Reform to speak about health plans that are not compliant with the Affordable Care Act.

Concerned about the potential impact to the marketplace and health outcomes for the patients we serve, Ascension Via Christi was a leader in opposing a state legislative measure that now allows associations to sell health plans exempt from state insurance oversight and regulation and the ACA.

Bruce and Brock emphasized the need to ensure that consumers are educated about the plans, how they compare to ACA-compliant insurance coverage, and other steps that may be needed next to mitigate any potential long-term consequences.
