It’s almost time for the Open Enrollment period to secure health coverage in 2020 through the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. But many Americans in need of health coverage are unaware that the clock is ticking.
In fact, the number of Americans lacking health insurance ticked up slightly last year, marking the first annual increase in the uninsured rate in nearly a decade, according to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Here are five things to know and do ahead of the open enrollment deadline:
- Know the deadline. The deadline to enroll in a health plan on the Marketplace is Sunday, December 15, 2019.
- Gather your information. Before you start the application process, gather the key information you will need to include about yourself and your household. Find the full application checklist at https://marketplace.cms.gov/outreach-and-education/apply-for-or-renew-coverage.pdf.
- Explore your options and get answers. Compare health plans and prices on HealthCare.gov so you can make a healthy choice for you and your family. Find answers to frequently asked questions at HealthCare.gov/get-answers.
- Begin the application process. Visit HealthCare.gov to begin the enrollment process. You can also contact the Marketplace Call Center: 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325). Operators can accommodate your language needs.
- Get face-to-face enrollment help near you. Visit localhelp.healthcare.gov to find a person or community group in your area who is trained to assist you in enrolling at no cost to you. Saint Agnes Hospital also has trained staff who can provide on-site enrollment assistance. These helpful individuals can also find out if you qualify for savings on health coverage. Fact: Financial help is available for qualifying people enrolling for health insurance on the marketplace.
