Ascension St. John in Oklahoma was recently highlighted by Tulsa Kids for helping to create more sustainable food options in areas that struggle with food deserts.
Local residents Jerica Wortham and Billie Parker began a community gardening project that children can help with. Their goal is to incorporate healthy food choices with community garden care in an effort to address food insecurity and health disparities.
“We wanted to equip the children in the community with skills that will help them become self-sufficient and make healthy choices,” Jerica told Tulsa Kids.
Jerica incorporates a “fruit of the day” so children get to choose something new to taste that exposes them to different flavors that are healthy and nourish their growth.
“Our partnership with Ascension St. John has afforded us the ability to get the supplies needed to start this project,” she told Tulsa Kids.
Billie has the young gardeners focused on three gardens: the pizza garden, the salsa garden, and a third garden to plant anything of interest to the kids.
